What are immigration physicals?

Immigration physicals, or immigration medical exams, are required of anyone who wants a green card (a permanent resident card allowing a foreign national to live and work long-term in the United States) and/or US citizenship.

To pass an immigration physical, you need to be in generally good health and meet specific guidelines. You won’t pass an immigration physical if you have:

  • A communicable disease of public health significance
  • Lack of proof of required vaccinations
  • A physical or mental disorder that includes harmful behavior
  • Drug abuse or addiction

If you meet the USCIS guidelines, you can proceed with your green card and/or citizenship application.

What should I bring to an immigration physical?

The Mariposa Medical Associates team recommends bringing the following documents to your immigration physical:

  • Passport or other government-issued identification
  • Unsigned copy of USCIS Form I-693
  • Immunization or vaccination records
  • Copy of your medical records
  • Proof of medical insurance (if you have any)
  • Prior chest X-rays (if applicable)

This paperwork makes it easier for the team to complete and submit your visa application.

What happens during an immigration physical?

At Mariposa Medical Associates, immigration physicals include the following steps:

Step 1: Review of your medical records

Your provider reviews your medical records, including your proof of vaccinations and results from any recent or relevant tests. They then have you fill out a questionnaire about your mental and physical health and substance use history.

Step 2: Physical exam

Your provider completes a physical exam. They check your skin for abnormal moles and growths; examine your eyes, ears, nose, throat, and lymph nodes; listen to your heartbeat and breathing; and measure your height and weight.

Step 3: Testing

Your provider orders lab tests, including bloodwork and urinalysis. These tests screen for contagious illnesses like sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Your provider also takes chest X-rays to screen for tuberculosis (TB).

Step 4: Completion of the necessary paperwork

At the end of your immigration physical, your Mariposa Medical Associates provider has you sign several forms. They then seal the forms in an envelope and send it to USCIS for approval. After USCIS reviews your documentation and confirms you’ve met all the requirements, they mail you a green card (permanent residency card).
